Mint Chocolate Chip Bread

A family tradition that goes back further than I can remember, the true start to the Christmas season for my family.

Set your oven to 350 and grease 2 5x9 or 6 mini loaf pans. You can also buy gift loaf boxes and bake directly in them for holiday gift giving. I do this every Christmas for teachers, family and friends.

Ingredients:

4c flour

4t baking powder

2c sugar

1c butter

1pint sour cream (full fat)

2t vanilla

12oz bag chocolate chips (I use mini chips, my mom uses regular morsels)

1 tbsp peppermint extract

Directions:

Let your butter and eggs rise to room temperature. Beat together the eggs, butter, sour cream and vanilla until smooth.

In a separate bowl, combine chocolate chips with peppermint and let sit for 5 minutes.

In a separate, large bowl, sift your flour and baking powder, then combine with sugar.

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until combined. Then add peppermint soaked chocolate chips and mix to distribute them evenly throughout the batter.

Bake at 350 for 50-60 minutes for regular bread loaf pans, 30 for mini loafs. We like the bread slightly undercooked so we can enjoy the ooey gooey top center line of the bread.

Let the bread cool on a rack for 10 minutes before removing from the pans. Once cooled, wrap in gallon size freezer bags or plastic wrap and pop in the freezer. This bread is best when served slightly thawed! It’s hard to cut when frozen so please please please be cautious when cutting the larger size loaves, and the mini loaves as well.

  • I have always used this method of making this bread. An alternate method is to but chilled butter into the dry ingredients before adding the wet ingredients. This is how my mom makes it and it does end up with a more crispy bread top but the flavor is the same. It’s delicious anyway you cut it ;)

  • PS Hide a little loaf of this bread in the back of your freezer. You’ll be delighted in the heat of the summer when you find a frozen loaf of Mint Chocolate Chip Bread to cool you down and delight your tastebuds
